Your privacy is important, even if our concern for itis often misplaced.

Nowhere is it more misplaced than the tech we use at work.

When you use office computers, phones, or other gear, you shouldnt expect privacy.

And yet, so many still do.

You surf the web when youre traveling, and maybe even your kid uses your laptop.

When I worked in IT, I saw this all the time.

For some people, their work laptop was the primary computer in their household, so everyone used it.

This rule extends to software, too.

In general, its all about protecting the company and its interests.

Those things make sense.

However, there are other, awful reasons companies keep tabs on their employees too.

There are still too many companies that use screen-scraping applications to watch what employees do.

Other companies dont block social media but do track their employees use of those sites.

Were not just talking about a quick chat with your spouse, either.

Essentially, take it out of the company-owned space.

Include everything thats important to youcontacts, downloads, files, emails, all of it.

You dont want to get stuck laid off without your contacts or any important additions to your portfolio.

Make a point to do it every week or month.

At least in that case theres no paper trail behind you.

you might see the trend here.

Its no absolute guarantee of privacy, but its a heck of a lot better.
