I’m Andy and here are my slightly embarrassing work habits and habitat.
I don’t even have a to-do list.
Location: New YorkCurrent Gig:Blogger with Lifehacker.
iOS isobviouslybetter than Android from a usability standpoint.Current computer:Lenovo Yoga Pro 2running Windows 8.1 and an iMac.
I spilled a beer on it last night.
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?
Gmail, Google Docs, Kinjathat’s like 75 percent of my day.
The addition of Primary/Social/Promotions tabs saved my life.
Google Docs is justwhatever, it works.
For instant messaging I useAdiumandPidgin.
Nice old-school IM clients with that AIM vibe.
All of the Gawker Media sites now use Slack for internal communication.
It’s not inherently different from any other chat platform out there, but it’s pretty slick.
The iOS app is nice too.
Oh TweetDeck, light of my life, fire of my lists, my sin, my soul.
Very helpful, very distracting.
Twitter is the best and worst video game.
Instapaperis my read-it-later app of choice.
I read every day on the subway, just on my phone.
This has nothing to do with work but is part of my daily lifethe Windows 8 Netflix app.
And I’m the sort of person who enjoys a high bitrate.
(Just finishedThe Fall, what should I watch next?)
What’s your workspace setup like?
The majority of my workdays are spent in the dark halls of the Gawker Media office.
Personally I like it that way.
I use an iMac (probably a 2012 model or thereabouts).
I like the Magic Mouse too, but its battery life is pretty mediocre.
At home it’s just a simple, messy desk with my laptop.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut/life hack?
I plan as little as I can, within reason.
Blog and then forget about itmaybe that’s a life hack.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager?
I don’t use a to-do list manager.
Most of my drafts just say “lorem.”
I’ve been wearing aPebble smartwatch.
I wouldn’t say that I can’t live without it, but it’s nice!
It’s pleasant to receive wrist notifications.
For example, it’s fun when you log into Facebook and see a red notification, right?
Imagine that sensationon your wrist!
More control over which notifications are pushed from my phone to the watch would be wonderful.
And my trustyLogitech M705 mouse.
It will outlive us all and I’ll bequeath it to my children.
The gear I carry some of the timeyou canread more about that here.
What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else?
What’s your secret?
I don’t know really.
Sometimes I’m a slight troll.
Just a polite troll, in that I like to confuse people.
Being intentionally stupid on LinkedIn is fun too.
What do you listen to while you work?
Though afterthe Jenny Lewis albumcame out last year I was listening to that andall her albumsandRilo Kileyfor months.
Usually nothing at all, though.
There is occasionally music playing in the office.
At the moment I’m all aboutasthma rock.
What are you currently reading?
I eat a lot of our own Gawker Media dogfood, mostly meaningJezebel,Gizmodo, andGawker.
AndThe Awl,Buzzfeed, Vice’sMotherboardis good, thenew verticalson Medium are often good.
And the New Yorker, NYT of course,Vulture,Vergie, Wired.
Scratch everything elseClickhole is actually the only site worth reading.
Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert on the streets, extrovert in the tweets.
What’s your sleep routine like?
Fill in the blank: I’d love to see _________ answer these same questions.
At heart I am just an old Japanese dude!
Glen Keane (thoughwe had a Disney animatornot long ago).
Obviously I am a Pixar and Disney fan.
The aforementioned Jenny Lewis would be great, wouldn’t she?
Vince Gilligan, Conan O’Brien,Abbi and Illana.
Stephen Colbertbut you might learn how Colbert worked bylistening to this.
George Saunders would be interesting.
Kind of want to revisitAdam Savage, and see what’s changed.
Maybe some SNL people would be cool.
Elon Musk,email meplease.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Just don’t be a jerk.
Or whatever, I don’t know, some people are just shitty.
Is there anything else you’d like to add that might be interesting to readers/fans?
I have no idea what I’m doing.
I try not to fall into that “imposter syndrome” feeling.
Staying ahead of the class by reading only one chapter ahead in the textbook.
I’m fun at parties.
