The latter contains acetaminophen, meaning its equivalent to taking the other plus Tylenol.

(Even though one is labeled maximum strength and the other isnt, their dosages are the same.)

There are only a handful of ingredients in the multitudes of boxes and bottles in the cold medicine aisle.

Knowing those ingredients makes you a smart shopper, your own over-the-counter alchemist of symptom relief.

(Yes, some peopleoverdose on cold medicines recreationally.

Thats because it can be used to make methamphetamine, so it comes with some extra regulations.

Youll have to show photo ID, and cant buy more than 9 grams per month.

InBenadryl, its an antihistamine that counters allergy symptoms; inZzzQuil, its a sleep aid.

Same drug, different branding.

It lasts longer in the body than ibuprofen, so youll find it in long-acting medicines.

Its very similar to naproxen, but is shorter acting.
