There are a lot of things we pay for that we don’t use completely.
Your cellphone service, for example, is part of a package deal.
But you probably don’t use all of the minutes you pay for each month.
For subscription services like this, finance author Ramit Sethi recommends “The A La Carte Method.”
He suspects many of us overspend on subscription services.
Or, buy a day pass for the gym only on the days you go.
The “a la carte method” is also the idea behind cellphone providerTing.
Of course, there are drawbacks.
First, this doesn’t work with every service.
Maybe your gym doesn’t offer day passes.
As Sethi says, the biggest drawback is that you de-automate your life.
So it’s not a solution for everyone, but it’s worth trying.
Cancel them and begin buying those things a la carte.
One month later, calculate how much you spent on all of your a la carte stuff.
To save money, take a stab at cut back where you’re free to.
Now that you’re buying things separately, you have more control to do this.
Control seems to be the main idea behind this method.
